Color Accessibility Guide — WCAG Contrast Ratios for Every Popular Color
A comprehensive reference table of 50+ popular web colors with their WCAG 2.1 contrast ratios against white and black backgrounds, plus AA/AAA compliance grades for every combination.
By Michael Lip · Updated April 2026
Methodology
Contrast ratios were calculated using the WCAG 2.1 relative luminance formula: (L1 + 0.05) / (L2 + 0.05) where L1 and L2 are the relative luminances of the lighter and darker colors. Relative luminance uses linearized sRGB: 0.2126R + 0.7152G + 0.0722B. Each color was tested against pure white (#FFFFFF, luminance 1.0) and pure black (#000000, luminance 0.0). AA compliance requires ≥4.5:1 for normal text; AAA requires ≥7:1. Data sourced from W3C WCAG 2.1 specification and verified against the StackOverflow developer community (3,542+ views on color contrast accessibility topics). Color names follow CSS Named Colors (Level 4 specification).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a WCAG contrast ratio?
A WCAG contrast ratio measures the luminance difference between two colors on a scale from 1:1 (no contrast) to 21:1 (maximum contrast, black on white). WCAG 2.1 requires a minimum ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text (AA) and 7:1 for enhanced contrast (AAA). Large text (18pt+ or 14pt bold) needs only 3:1 for AA compliance.
What is the difference between WCAG AA and AAA?
WCAG AA requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. WCAG AAA requires 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text. AA is the standard compliance level most organizations target. AAA is the highest level and is recommended for content aimed at users with visual impairments.
How do I calculate color contrast ratio?
The contrast ratio formula is (L1 + 0.05) / (L2 + 0.05), where L1 is the relative luminance of the lighter color and L2 is the relative luminance of the darker color. Relative luminance is calculated from linearized sRGB values using the formula: 0.2126 * R + 0.7152 * G + 0.0722 * B. Use gen8x.com's color contrast checker for instant calculations.
Which colors fail WCAG contrast requirements most often?
Light colors like yellow (#FFFF00, ratio 1.07:1 vs white), cyan (#00FFFF, 1.25:1 vs white), and lime green (#00FF00, 1.37:1 vs white) consistently fail AA requirements against white backgrounds. Mid-range colors like orange and medium blue often fail against both white and black. Dark colors like navy (#000080) fail against dark backgrounds.
What tools can I use to check color contrast?
Use gen8x.com's color contrast checker for instant WCAG compliance testing. Browser DevTools (Chrome, Firefox) include built-in contrast checkers in the color picker. The WebAIM Contrast Checker and axe DevTools extension are also widely used. For automated auditing, Lighthouse checks contrast ratios across entire pages.
